Oxford Digital Reference Shelf

CUNY has a new trial through December 3 to the following Oxford University Press reference works. There are 17 Oxford titles available under this program. See database news for a full list.


Open Worldcat

Open Worldcat is a new web service that enables you to search the holdings of thousands of libraries at once. It searches the same index as our Worldcat Subscription database but provides an easy to use interface. The holdings of most major research and academic libraries are including in both Open Worldcat and subscription Worldcat. If you access Open Worldcat on campus or via the GC’s Library Proxy Server (Off-Campus users supply your GC username and password) it will work directly with the CUNY “Find-It” service so you can see if any item you find belongs to a CUNY library.


Improved Remote Access

The library is happy to offer a new service that simplifies the remote access process to library electronic resources for the Graduate Center Community, the Graduate Center Library Proxy Server. Graduate Center Faculty, Students, and Staff can now get off-campus access to almost all of our library electronic resources using their Graduate Center Computer Account and a web browser. This new service requires no installation of additional software.

You can start using it now through the library database listings, please read the service description for further information. Please let us know what you think of this new service and about any problems or questions that come up during your use of it.


18th-Century Reading Room CUNY-Wide Essay Competition

The 2007 18th-Century Reading Room annual essay competition is open to all undergraduate and masters level students attending any of the CUNY colleges.

FIRST PRIZE $500

SECOND PRIZE $300

THIRD PRIZE $200

 

Essays will be judged by the following criteria:

  • Research centering on at least two resources housed in the collection of the 18th-Century Reading Room
  • Originality, style, clarity and thesis
  • Properly cited and formatted using current MLA or Chicago styles
  • No more than 8-10 pages, double spaced, using Times New Roman 12 pt. font

Submissions will be accepting at any time until May 11, 2007. Essays may be submitted electronically as a Word attachment to Caroline Fuchs at cfuchs@gc.cuny.edu with the subject line “2007 contest submission.” Essays sent via regular mail should be addressed to Caroline Fuchs at the Mina Rees Library/CUNY Graduate Center, 365 Fifth Avenue, New York NY 10016. Entries may also be hand delivered to room C196.05 on the concourse level of the library. Please include contact information with your submission.

Inter Campus Book Delivery CLICS

We are pleased to offer a inter-campus book delivery service for the CUNY library system this semester. It is called “CLICS”, CUNY Libraries Intercampus Services. You can now request a book from another CUNY library to be delivered to your library for pickup. Please consult our CLICS guide for instruction on how to use the service.

The 18ht-Century Reading Room will be hosting two informal talks in October as part of our Guest Speaker Series. The talks begin at 2:00 PM in the 18th-Century Reading Room, in room C196.05 on the Concourse level of the Mina Rees Library.

Endnote X Now Available

October 11, 2006

The latest version of Endnote for the Macintosh platform is available for download on the library website.  You must use your Graduate Center usename and password to access the download.  The file is available from the library endnote webpage.  If you have been using an earlier version of endnote on a mac make sure to backup any filters, databases, and other information you’ve created using endnote before installing Endnote X.  This information will need to be manually transferred into the new version.  Contact the library reference staff if you have problems installing the software.


Ask a Librarian Service

The library provides a “Ask a Librarian” online reference that allows patrons to contact a reference librarian via a real-time chat session during library reference hours.  Patrons can email reference librarians at all other times.
