Job Description:
Assists the Circulation Manager with daily operations by:
shelving books in correct location and sequence
shelf-reading the library’s collection
picking up, straightening, sorting, searching books
loading copy machines with paper, toner

Assists the Reserve Manager with daily operations by:
placing books and articles on reserve
retrieving closed reserve material for users upon request
finding reserve and non-reserve books upon request
returning reserve items at the end of each semester
keeping the reserve area neat

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES

  • handles a variety of tasks and determines their priority
  • demands high levels of accuracy in shelf reading and material retrieval
  • requires routine follow-up on many tasks, e.g. searching for books, shelf-reading

LEVEL OF DECISION-MAKING

  • primary service contact for student and instructors regarding reserve requests
  • determines when questions are best referred to a co-worker

REQUIREMENTS
knowledge of the Library of Congress call number system
weekend and evening hours
flexible work schedule
familiarity with Microsoft Office & PC desktop
pleasant and effective communication with library users

Help Wanted: Library Desk Coordinator

DUTIES: Primary service contact with library users during evening and weekend hours

· Charges and discharges library material

· Assesses, collects and records fines for lost books

· Registers new patrons and updates current patron records

· Sends out notices and follows-up on overdue or lost library materials

· Recalls books needed for reserve; places holds

· Communicates with a variety of Graduate Center offices

· Packages books to be returned to other CUNY colleges

· Places materials on reserve

· Helps library users find library material

· Returns reserve items to faculty at the end of each semester

· Maintains order of Reserve collection

REQUIREMENTS: Familiarity with computer applications and software; proficiency with Microsoft Windows desktop. Pleasant manner, good judgment and excellent communication and customer service skills including attention to detail, organizational skills, sound reasoning and judgment. Preference given to those with basic knowledge of library circulation & reserves operations. Familiarity with Library of Congress call number system also preferred.

HOURS: Weekend and evening hours; flexible work schedule

College Assistant Position Available

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists Dissertation Assistant with packing and shipping printed copies of dissertations and distribution of bound copies.
  • Assists Circulation manager with CLICS & copier service
  • Assists Chief Librarian and Systems Librarian with special projects as needed including web page updates, collection management and records maintenance
  • General office work including filing, sorting and photocopying

REQUIREMENTS: Proficiency with Microsoft Office software; flexibility in terms of work assignments; ability to follow directions and procedures and to work independently; attention to detail.

HOURS: Up to 20 hours/week M-F during regular business hours (9-5). Morning schedule preferred

College Assistant Position Available

POSITION: Circulation Assistant

DUTIES:

Under the supervision of the Circulation Manager

Shelves books and other library material

Shelf-reads the collection, places books in proper order & straightens books on shelves

Picks up books left around the library

Sorts new and other incoming books

Searches for missing books

Under the supervision of the Reserves Manager

Places books and articles on reserve

Retrieves closed reserve material for patrons upon request

Searches for missing books

Helps patrons find reserve and non-reserve books

Returns reserve items to professors at the end of each semester

Maintains order of reserve collection

REQUIREMENTS: Familiarity with library of Congress call number system. Familiarity with computer applications and software as well as proficiency using Microsoft Windows desktop required. Pleasant manner and good communication and customer service skills important. Must pay attention to detail, also must lift books off shelves and push full book trucks.

HOURS: Up to 20 hrs/week; may include weekend and evening hours, flexible work schedule
