Remote Access Settings Change

October 25, 2007

The configuration of our remote access server have changed. If you experience access problems please restart your computer and try again. If you still have problems after doing this please report the problem at (212) 817-7074 or send an email to the systems librarian at kreiss@gc.cuny.edu.

Off-Campus Bookmarks

If you’ve bookmarked or saved URLs generated during off-campus research while using the proxy, you will need to updated these links for them to continue to work. These URLs contain the Internet port the proxy used to use and will need to be updating. Updating the URL is relatively easy. All you need to do is:

  1. Look at the URL and locate the portion marked as “:2048
  2. Delete the “:2048” and save your change
  3. Make sure the new link works

If you need help with updating off-campus research URLs contact the systems librarian at the above contact information.

Remote Access Maintenance - Temporary Service Disruption

June 20, 2007

Dear Users,

It appears that our initial troubleshooting on Friday was incorrect, some subscription databases are working for remote users, some are not. We are sorry for this inconvenience and will continue to work with the Graduate Center Information Technology department to restore full service as soon as possible. We suggest trying the resource you are interested in using and if it does not work try one of our alternative remote access methods, citrix or library barcode, if you need immediate access to to the resource.

The library proxy server is back up as of this morning (6/22). We apologize for the service outage of the last two days. Please report ongoing problems to the systems librarian, Kevin Reiss, at (212) 817-7074 or kreiss@gc.cuny.edu.

In order to improve the reliability of remote access to library resources we have reconfigured our library proxy server this morning. As a result of this update some remote users will be unable to access our subscription research services or make some types of Interlibrary Loan requests using our ILLiad system for the next 12-24 hours depending on the network management policies of their local Internet Service Provider. If you are unable to access the service and require immediate use of the Graduate Center Library’s remote resources you can try one of our two other remote access methods, citrix or library barcode. ILL users who experience problems can make a manual request by logging into ILLiad and filling in the appropriate resource request form. If you continue to experience problems using the proxy server beyond the end of the business day tomorrow please contact the systems librarian, Kevin Reiss, at (212) 817-7074 or kreiss@gc.cuny.edu.

Google Scholar for CUNY books, GC articles, ILL

April 27, 2007

Use Google Scholar anywhere to find many (but not all) books and articles owned by the Grad Center library. Access Google Scholar via the Grad Center library proxy server and set up Google Scholar to recognize Grad Center resources. Then use links to get full text articles, to request CUNY books via CLICS, and to auto-fill your Interlibrary loan requests.

Google Scholar off campus

1. Either select Google Scholar from the library Databases list or go to http://ezproxy.gc.cuny.edu:2048/login?url=http://scholar.google.com

2. Click on Scholar Preferences

3. Find the Graduate Center as a Google Scholar “Library Link.” It appears as “Mina Rees Library CUNY Graduate Center.” Check mark and save preferences.

4. Do a Google Scholar search.

5. If “Find Full-Text at GC” appears, follow the link to “Find-it” and then to Grad Center library full-text articles. “Related Info at GC” means the item is either in the CUNY+ library catalog or in the WorldCat Interlibrary loan database. Follow links to “Find-it” to search and request via the CUNY+ libraries catalog (or other catalogs) or to request via Interlibrary loan. If you have a Grad Center Interlibrary Loan login, your forms will be automatically filled in and sped through our lending network.

Improved Remote Access

October 19, 2006

The library is happy to offer a new service that simplifies the remote access process to library electronic resources for the Graduate Center Community, the Graduate Center Library Proxy Server. Graduate Center Faculty, Students, and Staff can now get off-campus access to almost all of our library electronic resources using their Graduate Center Computer Account and a web browser. This new service requires no installation of additional software.

You can start using it now through the library database listings, please read the service description for further information. Please let us know what you think of this new service and about any problems or questions that come up during your use of it.
