CUNY has a trial through December 15 to Credo Reference, providing the text of 446 reference works, as well as over 200,000 images, over 700 music files, and interactive maps and charts.  This resource can be searched by subject and by type of reference work: biographies, dictionaries, quotations, etc.

As of November 17, the Graduate Center subscribes to Oxford Scholarship Online, providing the full text of hundreds of scholarly books published by Oxford University Press.  While the Graduate Center’s subscription allows access to abstracts of books in other disciplines, text is available for titles only in economics and finance, history, linguistics, literature, mathematics, music, philosophy, political science, and psychology.  Title lists are available for each discipline.

LexisNexis has just added the Marquis Who’s Who Biographies.  These include Who Was Who in America, Who’s Who in Advertising, Who’s Who Among Human Services Professionals, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who in American Law, Who’s Who in American Nursing, Who’s Who of American Women, Who’s Who in the East, Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America, Who’s Who in Entertainment, Who’s Who in Finance and Industry, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who’s Who in the Midwest, Who’s Who in Religion, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the Media and Communications, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, Who’s Who in the West, and Who’s Who in the World.  To search these resources, go to LexisNexis, select the Sources tab at the top of the search screen, and on the next screen enter Marquis in the Find a Source search box.

Newly installed equipment in the Media Room will allow you to digitize analog media (lp/cassettes and video/VHS/) to e-files and save them to a portable drive (note that most of the files will be too large for a flash drive).

You can use your own mini headphones with the 1/8” jacks – no headphone checkout from the circulation desk will be required. Instructions on using this equipment are on the library’s web site at: http://library.gc.cuny.edu/faq/media.htm

The latest version of Endnote for Windows is now available for free download by Grad Center students, faculty, and staff. Use Endnote to organize your citations, take notes, format footnotes, and generate bibliographies.

Information Technology has placed two book and paper scanners on the east 34th St. side of the library’s 2nd floor. Scanning is free; a Graduate Center computer network login is required. Each Epson GT-2500 scanner has a sheet feeder. Both are connected to PCs with Epson scanning software shortcuts on the desktop. Documents and photos may be scanned to JPG, PDF and other file formats, then saved or emailed. Contact the Information Technology Help Desk on the concourse level of the library for assistance with these scanners.

A new ScanPro 2000 microform scanner digitizes microfilm, microfiche, and even microcard (opaque) images to PDF format. The new scanner is  on the 35th St. side of the library’s 2nd floor. The scanner was funded by the Graduate Center student technology fee.

As of October 13 CUNY subscribes to Education Index Retrospective, which indexes 500 education periodicals from 1929 through 1983.  This database may be searched in conjunction with Education Full Text, which includes articles from recent issues of 350 periodicals.

The Graduate Center has a trial of this new database of primary and secondary sources, as well as manuscript locations, for 180 women writers. Includes bibliographies, catalogs, contextual studies, reference works, essay anthologies, special issues of journals, genre studies, handbooks and pedagogical tools, compilations containing texts, and dissertations. Because this bibliographical database is available only as a trial, there are no links to possible text. Search for sources in the CUNY catalog or the journals database. Because this resource does not yet have IP recognition, it is password protected. Users must log in with their Graduate Center computer network accounts to locate the user name and password.

Library Specialist/Interlibrary Loan Supervisor – Higher Education Assistant/Mina Rees Library

Under the direction of the Head of Interlibrary Loan Services (ILL), this person manages the ILL office staff and work flow for one of the library’s core services (30,000+ transactions per year); performs and delegates work assignments including the receipt and return of interlibrary loan material; monitors service quality; and participates in the ongoing improvement of ILL services.

Qualifications:

Required: Bachelor’s degree and four years’ related experience required; MLS degree or Master’s in a related field may be substituted for a portion of the experience requirement.

Preferred:

• Skill with Microsoft Office Applications

• Successful supervisory experience including the ability to provide clear instructions, promote cooperation among subordinates and assist in staff evaluations

• Library, especially interlibrary loan experience

• Demonstrated potential for significant achievement and growth in position.

• Demonstrated problem-solving skills and ability to work without direct supervision.

• Ability to understand service documentation, & master new software and hardware including managing statistical software & web applications.

• Demonstrated interpersonal and organization skills including: dedication to providing excellent service; ability to communicate clearly on the telephone, in person, and via email; ability to set priorities and work efficiently under pressure; accuracy and attention to detail.

Salary Range: $41,624 – $51,487         FLSA Status: Exempt
