The Mina Rees Library is seeking a creative and self-motivated Reference Librarian to advance reference and other library services. Under the supervision of the Associate Librarian for Reference and Access Services and working in a highly collegial environment, this person will:

• Provide in-person and online reference service, including occasional evening and weekend hours.
• Develop research-related assessment tools, implement assessment programs, and provide analysis of library services and student learning.
• Consult individually with students and faculty on research projects, methods, and best practices; work closely with academic department representatives providing instruction and information about library resources.
• Develop and offer workshops, tutorials, and course-specific instruction; collaborate with faculty in course construction; develop online and classroom instruction tools; collaborate with peers in university-wide information literacy initiatives.
• Participate in collection development, including print and online resources; develop and maintain subject and policy guides.
• Represent the Graduate Center library in library, college and university venues.

Qualifications:
Required: MLS from an ALA-accredited program; strong public-service ethic; ability to work effectively with graduate students and faculty; two or more years of post-MLS experience in an academic or research library providing reference service, instruction, web development, academic assessment, project design and management. For appointment at Assistant Professor rank, an additional subject master’s degree is required.
Preferred: Familiarity with web development software, bibliographic citation software, expertise in a range of academic resources.

This is a 12-month, tenure-track position.A record of scholarly achievement and service must be demonstrated for tenure and promotion.

The Graduate Center’s access to journals published by SAGE has increased from 170 to 510 titles. SAGE Premier includes 19 communication studies journals from 1955 to the present, 36 education journals from 1917, 26 health science journals from 1897, 40 management journals from 1947, 29 political science journals from 1890, 36 psychology journals from 1941, and 37 sociology journals from 1952, as well as 287  journals in other areas of the social sciences, humanities, sciences, technology, and medicine. A title list is available.

Dr. Marilyn H. Pettit, a historian, teacher, author and archivist, has been hired to work with Madelyn Kent, the Old York Library Curator, and the Mina Rees Library staff, to catalog the rich resources of the Old Library Library. In addition to a collection of approximately 9,000 volumes of books related to many aspects of New York City history, the collection includes over 4000 photos and other materials including maps, lithographs, and other objects.

Dr. Pettit has worked at NYU, was Director of the University Archives/Columbiana Library at Columbia University and was most recently Vice President for Collections at the Brooklyn Historical Society. She’ll be working with Madelyn Kent and others of us as we plan out what needs to be done for the project so that this collection can become more accessible to students, faculty and others interested in this subject.

The Mina Rees Library’s “Digital Murray Hill” web site has been included in a new online digital collections directory, digitalMETRO. Developed by The Metropolitan New York Library Council (METRO), the directory features descriptive records and links to digital collections created and maintained by METRO member libraries.

The directory currently features records for over 150 collections and will continue to grow as member libraries add new projects. Take a moment to explore digitalMETRO at http://nycdigital.org.

Stephen Klein has joined the Mina Rees Library staff as the Systems Librarian. He will be responsible for helping to upgrade the library’s website and to keep the all of the behind-the-scene technology working right so that our Interlibrary Loan, Electronic Reserve and other web-based services continue to function well.

Mr. Klein has both an M.L.S. and a Masters degree in History and worked previously at Pratt Institute Library as the Electronic Resources/Systems Librarian. He also has many years experience working variously as a Systems Administrator, Analyst and Technical Writer in the private sector.

The Graduate Center has a trial through May 22 to Oxford Biblical Studies Online.  This resource includes The New Oxford Annotated Bible, The Oxford Bible Commentary, The Apocryphal Old Testament, Concise Concordance to New Revised Standard Version, and New American Bible Concise Concordance.

Journal Citation Reports are now part of the Graduate Center’s subscription to Web of Science.  This resource includes the number of articles published in journals indexed by the Web of Science and the number of citations to individual journals. This information may be viewed by journal name, subject, publisher, and country or territory. Be sure to choose science or social sciences before selecting a subject. Statistics are available only for 2007. Data for 2008 is expected to become available in the summer of 2009.

CUNY has a trial through May 31 to A to Z Maps Online.  Available resources include physical, population, political, environmental, and antique maps.

CUNY has a trial through August 31, 2010, to LitFinder.  This Gale databases provides the text of 150,000 poems, 7,100 short stories, 3,700 essays, 2,400 speeches, and 1,300 plays, as well as 2,300 biographies of writers and 1,800 illustrations.  LitFinder also indexes some literary works for which it does not have the rights to the text.  In these cases the database displays the titles of collections where the materials may be found.  Text from LitFinder also appears in search results in Literature Resources from Gale under the Primary Sources & Literary Works tab.

As of April 1, most libraries in New York State have access to ProQuest Platinum Periodicals, providing the full text of 1,509 periodicals, many of them scholarly journals.  A title list is available.
